Curriculum Implementation

The curriculum at The Radcliffe School is organised to meet both the statutory requirements and to offer a broad and balanced offer for all students. Each Key Stage is designed to offer pathways into next steps of education to meet the needs of the students but delivered within the constraints of the resources available. Maths English and Science are at the core of the offer for all students in Year 7 through to Year 11, and where required, offered to Year 12 and Year 13 students as a resit option. KS4 starts in Year 9, with options selected during Year 8, and KS5 starts in Year 12, with selections made during Year 11 and confirmed following GCSE results.

When choosing subjects for accreditation, it is important for all students to maintain a range of experiences through different subjects. From September 2019 all Year 9 students will study a Humanities or Modern Foreign Language subject. These subjects are important for our students to maintain learning of different cultures, communities and societies outside of their own community. In addition, all students will study a subject from the creative arts areas of the curriculum so students learn different ways to express their ideas and have the opportunity to develop creativity and problem solving skills.

This proposal gives every student a broad and balanced curriculum, but still offers a flexibility of academic and vocational routes with a variety of accreditations to maximise the outcomes achieved by each individual. This model also maintains the widest possible choice for progression routes Post 16 as every student will have a greater range of subjects on which to choose future opportunities for education and training.

Whilst this structures choices far more, this model does not insist that every student will fall within the old EBACC curriculum. A selection of a Language or History or Geography gives our students a choice. The principle of enabling our students to experience every aspect of the curriculum at this foundation stage will be important to enable our students to receive the best well-rounded educational experience on which to build Post 16 and beyond.

KS5 offers a selection of BTEC and Linear A2 courses. Students, where appropriate, can select up to 4 Level 3 courses, and can mix and match BTEC and A Level courses. Resit English and Maths are available where required. All courses meet or exceed the Guided Learning Hours as defined by the Examination Boards.

The timetable is organised in a one week format delivered into six lessons per day, fifty minutes per lesson. The sixth form utilises a seventh period, where required, to allow greater flexibility on the curriculum offer available.
